Oxitec “Phoned In” Safety Tests, Used Internet Searches Instead.

The Oxitec mosquito contains DNA from 5 different species including animals, plants, bacteria (E. coli) and viruses (Herpes simplex.) How did Oxitec determine that this combination wouldn’t cause any toxic or allergic effects in the humans bitten by the released females? They did a Google search! (Actually, PubMed, an online document databse.) Of course, they only searched for two parts of their DNA sequence… the fluorescent marker from coraland the Herpes virus. When their search didn’t turn up any papers with the words “toxic” or “toxicity,” they decided their unique Frankenstein DNA was safe!
